In 1945, Philippe Rothschild began commissioning artists, many globally renowned, to design its wine labels. Château Mouton Rothschild has continued that tradition to this day, and the artists’ labels have become the visual lodestar for Mouton Rothschild wines.
A château with so much history and as artful as Rothschild could only bring together some of the most celebrated artists of their day. It reads like a murder’s row of artistes: Miró, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Tàpies, Francis Bacon, Dali, Balthus, Jeff Koons.
The art of wine celebrated visually by artists who can appreciate process, when it comes to craft, is a perfect marriage. On their celebrated collaboration, Mouton Rothschild explains: “Artists have complete freedom of creation, though certain themes, such as the vine, the pleasure of drinking and the ram, the Mouton Rothschild emblem, have proved a particularly rich source of inspiration.”
